Alternately identified as Poem 683 or by its opening line, "The Soul unto itself" was one of a small number of works Emily Dickinson shared in correspondences with her friend Samuel Bowles. Though Bowles was the owner and editor of The Springfield Republican, a daily newspaper that printed four of the ten poems published – anonymously – during her lifetime, "The Soul unto itself" was not made public until six years after Dickinson's death (in 1891's Poems: Second Series).

TAMIL

Tamil (meaning "sweet sound") is one of a family of South Asian languages collectively known today as Dravidian languages. It is considered to be the world's oldest living (i.e. still spoken) language and still boasts some 75 million speakers according to current estimates, most of whom live in India (and, to a lesser degree, Sri Lanka and Singapore).

In addition to "curry," other Tamil words that have been incorporated into English include:

At two-and-a-half decades (1986-2012) spent on a Major League Baseball roster, Jamie Moyer sits in third place for most MLB seasons played. (Nolan Ryan and Cap Anson are tied for first with 27.)

In his final year, at the age of 49, Moyer became the oldest person in MLB history to be credited as a game's winning pitcher. Over the course of his career, Moyer started 638 games (16th all time), pitched 4,074 innings (39th), and surrendered the most home runs (522) of any MLB hurler.

RAIMI

Sam Raimi was only 20 years old when he started filming the cult classic independent horror flick, The Evil Dead. Released in 1981, the movie – which took two years to complete, in part because Raimi needed to raise more funds midway through – starred his high school friend Bruce Campbell and was assistant edited by Joel Coen (before he started making his own feature films with brother Ethan.)

Buoyed by praise from Stephen King, The Evil Dead morphed into a word-of-mouth success, with Raimi returning to write and direct two sequels (Evil Dead II, Army of Darkness). Following a string of star-studded box office disappointments (The Quick and the Dead, A Simple Plan, For Love of the Game), Raimi's career soared to new heights when he helmed a trio of blockbuster Spider-Man movies starting Tobey Maguire as the titular webslinger.

Irish scientist Robert Boyle's eponymous law was first described within his amazingly titled 1662 work, New Experiments Physico-Mechanical, Touching the Air (2nd edition): Whereunto is added a defence of the authors explication of the experiments, against the objections of Franciscus Linus and Thomas Hobbes.

Expressed as the equation P₁ V₁ = P₂ V₂, Boyle's law states that the pressure and volume of a confined gas have an inverse relationship to one another – as one goes up, the other goes down – assuming temperature stays constant. (Linus and Hobbes couldn't argue with that!)

The six-tiered TV Parental Guidelines rating system went into effect in the United States on January 1, 1997. ORE-IDA

Primarily known for its potato products, the name Ore-Ida was devised as a geographical nod to the company's origins in Ontario, Oregon, a small town on the Oregon-Idaho border.

Ore-Ida's most notable innovation – Tater Tots™ – was created as the result of an effort to reduce food waste at its factories. After initial attempts to feed leftover potato scraps to cows were unsuccessful (the animals got too fat), it was determined that they could instead be processed into little log-shaped patties and sold to the American public. Yum!

GHEE

Clarified butter is pure butterfat – a product derived by heating butter so that its milk solids (whey, casein) separate out and any water it contains evaporates.

Known for its distinctive nutty flavor, Ghee is a special type of clarified butter endemic to India, where it is used for cooking, to treat skin burns (in the practice of ayurveda, the country's alternative medicine tradition), and as an offering to Hindu deities in religious ceremonies.
